T’PURAM: Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan laughed away the reports that CPM workers had assaulted Kerala Water Authority (KWA) and KSEB officials.

“Aren’t they just newspaper reports,” the Chief Minister said with a smile that implied that the reports were bogus. As if this was not enough, he even expressed amusement to find that a group like the government officials could be so harassed.

“No one, not even a single political party, can hope to attack, weaken or belittle government officials,” Achuthanandan said.

Either the Chief Minister is playing safe or he is not tuned to what is happening around him. Premkumar, the CPM ward councillor who was behind the attack on the KSEB office on April 28 surrendered before the police the very next day of the attack.

A gang led by Premkumar had barged into the Thirumala Electrical Major Section Assistant Executive Engineer’s Office, assaulted the employees and destroyed office property. Delay in switching on street lights was said to be the immediate provocation.

On April 21, a group of CPM men led by Corporation councillor Karamana Hari forced into the KWA’s Kuriathy division and roughed up the Assistant Engineer, the meter reader and a casual worker. The three had to be admitted to the General Hospital.
