T’PURAM: Muslim League district vice -president and District Cooperative Bank director-board member M.A. Kareem has been arrested by the Crime Branch on Thursday in a cheating case.

Kareem, a resident of Balaramapuram, had allegedly helped a person to take a loan of Rs 15 lakh using the landed property of another person and other fake documents. Crime Branch DySP Somasekharan, who is probing the case, arrested Kareem.

The incident pertaining to the case occurred in 2003. Balakrishnan, a native of Vellarada, was offered a loan by Kareem and another person, Hasanar of Mudavanmugal. Later they wanted Balakrishnan to sign on certain documents. The papers were actually documents giving power of attorney by Balakrishnan to Hasanar’s wife Habeena.

Using this, Hasanar took a loan of Rs 15 lakh using Balakrishnan’s landed property. Kareem, who was aware of the malpractice, helped Hasanar in getting the loan of Rs 15 lakh. Owing to non-payment, the loan dues have accumulated to Rs 21 lakh.
