Caste is still a barrier, when it comes to voicing society’s rights: Sugathakumari

published on May 27, 2013

Eminent poetess Sugathakumari has pointed out the inability of Keralites in safeguarding our land, womenfolk and language. She said that caste still stood as a barrier when it came to society seeking its rights. Sugathakumari’s statements came while addressing a gathering at the 129th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Pandit Karuppan.

The commemorative programme was held in the premises of Mahadeva Temple, Pavakkulam. The programme was inaugurated by VHP State President Justice M Ramachandran.

“Pandit Karuppan was fearless in making his voice clear against the conversion of Dalits, at a time when untouchability was widespread in society,” she said.

“Why is the Malayali taking so much of pride? I don’t understand. We are incapable of safeguarding our womenfolk, land, water bodies and language,” said Sugathakumari, who was conferred the Pandit Karuppan Award.

“We are not able to fight for our rights, owing to barriers of caste. Majority section try to get their concessions in the name of caste. What more, even leaders are now addressing the masses on the basis of caste,” she pointed out.
