Kochi: The recently conducted Quran seminar ‘Highways of Quranic Research’ which was attended by Vice Chancellor of Calicut University Dr M Abdu Salam, has snowballed into a controversy.

The programme was conducted jointly by the former leaders of outlawed SIMI and leaders of the Jihadi group Popular Front of India with the newly constituted Tibyan Institute of Quranic Research and Assimilation and Islamic chair of Calicut University.

The programme witnessed prominent participation of those leaders who have been under police scanner since long and have now moved into Popular Front of India, including P Khoya, IA Vilayathulla, PM Ishaq, Aattakhoya Thangal etc. Apart from speeches made by these people, the programme was attended by over 50 PFI activists, including Yahiya Kammukutty of Hubli terror attack fame.

It has been reported that speeches rendered were derogatory and packed with controversial statements and utterances. “Statements like “nothing substantial is being taught by the university” and that “the Quran offers more” and “every scientific and social issue has its origin in Quran” etc were galore at the meet. None of these were opposed by the VC,” said sources.

The state’s academic society has raised ample protests against the move of misusing state platforms for promoting the ideology of terror groups.
