BJP workers seized and burnt the copies of mid-day newspaper – Kaumudi Flash – and staged protest demonstration in front of the newspaper’s office here on Friday. The newspaper was distributed in BJP’s stronghold areas claiming that the BJP had withdrawn from the seven-seater Thiruvananthapuram by-poll.

Addressing the media here, BJP spokesperson BK Sekhar said that his party would initiate criminal and civil cases against the newspaper for publishing the wrong report on its candidate’s withdrawal during the polling process. The BJP had already filed a case with the district collector alleging that the newspaper management had violated the electoral rules.

Blaming UDF agents for the publication of the report Mr Sekhar said, “Kaumudi Flash copies were distributed in the BJP strongholds by 10:30 am. This is against media ethics. As per our inquiries, the persons connected with the UDF had distributed the newspaper. We would also take up the matter before the Press Council.”

Mr Sekhar also said that the observers of the Election Commission had purposefully ignored the exorbitant costs of the campaign of both fronts. “No observer observed the pumping of money by the LDF and the UDF,” he alleged.
