BJP warns MES chief over remark on Panicker

State BJP president PK Krishnadas has asked Muslim Education Society chairman Dr Fazal Gafoor to be cautious when using words against NSS general secretary PK Narayana Panicker, “a respected Hindu community leader”.

In his response here on Monday to Gafoor’s statement on Sunday that Panicker was talking like a street rogue with regard to the Sachar Committee report, Krishnadas said if the MES leader did not behave properly then he would have to face dire consequences.

The statement of the BJP leader is considered as a serious message to the MES leader and that the party cadre and sympathisers consider this as a bold political move on the part of the party.

The BJP, which was in political hibernation in the State after the two fronts, the UDF and the LDF, made a clever political move by coming out in support of the NSS when they needed it most.

The Hindus in general are not quite happy in the manner in which the LDF Government has tried to appease the Muslim community in the State and most of them feel that the minority community is getting more sops which is not in proportion to its position.

The LDF, and in particular the CPI(M), is moving forward by pampering the Muslim community and this could have a negative impact on the Hindu community and could alter the political balance in the State, it is felt.

The NSS, which has all along been maintaining a studied distance with the two fronts, may have to do a rethinking after Fazal Gafoor’s allegedly unethical language against the general secretary of the organisation.

No political party other than the BJP has responded to this so far. Several members of the NSS and local level leaders of the organisation are happy at the spontaneous response from the BJP in a major social issue.

BJP State vice-president V Muraleedharan had the other day at a Press conference in Kozhikode lashed out at the CPI(M)-led LDF Government for having announced the Paloli Muhammad Kutty Committee report, which was alleged to have been appeasing the Muslim community.

The BJP has always been trying to forge a relationship with the NSS and the SNDP on a political level but the pressures from within the organisations and the power equation in the State had prevented the organisations from extending an olive branch to the BJP’s overtures.

SNDP Yogam general secretary Velapally Natesan had earlier tried for a tie-up with the BJP national leadership and then Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani was the special guest at a function organised to unveil statue of Sree Narayana Guru in Thiruvananthapuram while NDA was in power at the Centre.
