ALAPPUZHA: The district administration has clamped curfew in the one-km radius of Valiya Chudukadu Martyr’s Memorial, where the BJP has decided to organise a public meeting in support of Nandigram martyrs on Saturday.

RDO KG Raju, who is holding the charge of District Collector, has said that curfew has been clamped in view of the possible threat to law and order situation due to BJP’s meeting.

Alappuzha SP EJ Jayaraj also issued a statement announcing curfew. BJP district president KS Rajan and general secretary Velliyakulam Parameswaran alleged that the curfew was clamped as per the instructions of the CPM. So, the BJP would go ahead with the public meeting, they said.

BJP’s West Bengal state general secretary Rahul Sinumi will inaugurate the meet to be held to express solidarity with the agitators of Nandigram.

BJP state general secretary MN Radhakrishnan will administer the oath expressing solidarity on the occasion. BJP district president KS Rajan, district general secretary Veliyakulam Parameswaran and organisational secretary K Soman will address the meet.

BJP state secretary B Radhakrishna Menon said here that CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan’s statement on Nandigram incident reminded them of the response of Sir CP to the Punnapra Vayalar shootout.

“Sir CP was of the view that the policemen were then forced to gun down the ‘varikuntham’-holding agitators as part of self-defence. Pinarayi spoke on the same lines defending Nandigram firing,” he said.
