BJP to launch campaign against Sachar report

via Pioneer News Service | Malappuram published on April 6, 2008

The BJP will conduct public programmes from the village level throughout the State to create awareness among people about the dangers of implementing the Rajinder Sachar and Paloli Muhammad Kutty committee reports on minorities.

Addressing a district convention of the party here on Sunday, BJP State president PK Krishnadas said that the campaign would start on April 14 and end on April 27.

BJP’s national leader and leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha LK Advani would inaugurate the concluding programme at Thiruvananthapuram.

The BJP State president said that April 14 was chosen to coincide with the birthday of BR Ambedkar. Krishnadas said that both the Sachar and Paloli committee reports were against the interests of the nation.

The BJP has been in the forefront of agitations against the report prepared by retired Justice Rajinder Sachar, which states that the Muslims have not got their due and that there should be more reservations in the Government sector and in educational institutions for the uplift of the Muslim community.

The report indicates that the Muslims are lagging behind in education and that the number of dropouts from primary schools was bigger in the Muslim community than in other communities and this lack of primary education of a majority of children of the community was causing unrest among the Muslims.

The committee also reports that the proportion of Muslims in Government jobs across the country was much less compared to the majority community and that this was also another reason for the community’s lack of advancement socially.

The CPI(M) which is determined to implement the Sachar committee recommendations had constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty, which found that even in Kerala, Muslims were not properly represented in several areas including educational institutions and Government departments.

The BJP has been opposing the recommendations of both the committees and wants the Governments both at the Centre and in the State to reject these recommendations. The party has, after detailed studies, found that the recommendations must not be implemented as it would create divisionism in the country among different communities.

The RSS and the BJP have stringently criticised the report and has said that such reports will lead to chaos in the system and that the appeasement and pampering of a community would lead to divisionism in the society.

The BJP leadership will conduct the campaign throughout the State in a bid to create awareness among the general public on the impact the implementation of this report would have on the society. The BJP State leadership finds this as one of the prestigious campaigns. It also plans to use this as an opportunity to educate the general public on the social imbalance created by the CPI (M) by implementing such reports.
