THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala coast would be ‘very badly affected’ in the event of any tsunami if the work on the Sethu Samudram Ship Channel Project (SSCP) progressed in the present form, BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said here.

Talking to reporters, he wanted the state government to take up the matter with the Centre.

Demanding suspension of the work of the project, Joshi said his party would launch a campaign against the present alignment of the project.

The present alignment of the project was against the interests of the nation, he said.

Defence Minister A K Antony should take up the matter in the cabinet considering the safety of the state, he said.

A strategic and scientific impact study should be conducted before proceeding further with the work, Joshi said adding that he had already written a letter in this regard to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Referring to the Nandigaram incident, Joshi said it exposed the two face of CPI(M). ‘Farmers were killed in support of capitalists by those who claim to be their protectors”, Joshi said.
