The festival of the year at the Brahmasthanam Temple at Edappally here got to a great start on Friday with Mata Amritanandamayi lighting the traditional lamp on Friday.

Much to the enchantment and delight of thousands of her devotees, the Mata arrived early morning at Brahmasthanam at Kunnumpuram on the occasion of the Mahotsavam, the second anniversary of the installation of the temple idol.

This was her first public appearance after returning from New York where she received the Interfaith International Award 2006. She was earlier received at the Nedumbassery airport by the Amritanandamayi Mutt general secretary Swami Poornamirthananda Puri.

Mata Amrithanandamayi addressed her devotees late Friday evening at the venue where more than 25,000 people were seated.

The Mata said that more than 90 per cent of those who came to her were in some or other kind of depression. “Everybody worries about future. This condition is like sleeping in front of a cobra’s hole. I don’t ask you not to think of the future. Make plans but don’t lose yourselves worrying about it,” she said.

“Whenever you reach your destination safe and sound, remember that you have been blessed and saved from many mishaps and accidents. This divine blessing comes only from humility,” she told her devotees.

Earlier, Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) chairperson Antony Isaac, in his welcome address, said that the Mata had succeeded in bringing the light of hope to the lives of millions around the world.

Thousands of devotees joined in for the devotional songs session and meditation led by her after which she personally blessed her devotees who queued up on the basis of a token system. Special arrangements were made for darshan to the sick, physically challenged and elderly people.
