Kochi : The Local Fund Accounts Committee of the State Legislature has recommended that the Madras Hindu Religious Endowment Act of 1951 be amended to smoothen the administration of the temples in the Malabar region.

The Committee headed by Mr M Murali had conducted a study on the functioning of the temples in Malabar and the report was presented before the Assembly yesterday.

It has pointed out a number of discrepancies in the existing rules under which the temples are run at present.

The government is planning to create a Malabar Devaswom Board so as to unify the activities/functioning of the temples in the region through a legislation. Till then, to simplify the procedures laid down in the 1951 Act, the Committee has recommended to the state government to take up the issue with the Tamil Nadu government for amending the Madras Religious Endowment Act, Mr Murali was quoted as saying.
