Alcohol Abuse on the Increase in Kerala

via HK Correspondent published on January 2, 2007

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Kerala under the Marxist government is fast becoming a den for Alcohol and other drug abusers. Reports indicate that keralites spent more than 25 cores of rupees buying Alcohol and spirits for celebrating the New Year. The whole communities of Kerala are besieged by alcohol abusers. Increasing alcohol sale has been shaped by deeply, and for the most part unfortunately, by broader ideological agenda of the communist government to destroy individuals, families and communities. The Communist and the Congress government in Kerala often failed to take Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse problem seriously. The present Communist government is more worried about inner party fights than the public distress over alcohol abuse and its effects on families and communities. Particularly disadvantaged and the poor families are the chief victims of increased alcohol sale promoted by the communist government.

The media, academicians, intellectuals and phony liberals are still playing with empty rhetoric and slogans about the increased alcohol sale in Kerala. Legislators have shown a tilt away from deterrence and prevention of alcohol abuse. Increased alcohol sale leads to violence, family abuse, traffic deaths, suicide and crimes. Kerala now ranks as the leading state in alcohol use, crime, violence and suicide.

The accumulating evidence suggests that Kerala is in series crises. If the government is not serious in reducing alcohol consumption with necessary seriousness and intensity Kerala will soon become a state full of alcoholics and drug addicts. It will take a long, hard political effort to take bold, creative commitment that we need in order to do many thing to prevent the deadly tragedy that is facing Kerala. It’s easy to be abstractly in favor of more and more alcohol sale to increase public revenue. Nevertheless, that the time is right for making a strong effort to develop the political momentum to the policy and programs that can be effective to prevent alcohol abuse.

Failure to prevent alcohol abuse will become increasingly deadly in view of the economic and social changes that is happening in Kerala. It is not by accident that Kerala has the highest suicide rates, serious crimes, murder, sex abuse and family breakdown in India. It is no exaggeration to say that Kerala has reached a point where the future of civilized life in the cities and villages has been imperiled by alcohol abuse, crime and violence. At this last hour, it is important to reverse the disintegration, the political parties have allowed to continue for the last many years in God’s own country.
