Al-qaeda has released a new video in Urdu calling on Muslims in the Kashmir region to follow in the footsteps of their “brothers” in Iraq and Syria and launch a jihad against Indian authorities.

The video, uploaded on jihadi forums by al-Qaeda’s media arm Al-Sahab, is probably the first produced by the global terror network that specifically focuses on Kashmir. Titled The war should continue: A message for Kashmir’s Muslims, the video features a statement by Maulana Asim Umar, one of al-Qaeda two Pakistani propagandists.

The video, believed to have been issued on Friday, features images of demonstrations in Jammu and Kashmir and the silhouette of an armed man juxtaposed against a purported photo of the Dal Lake.

Umar addresses Muslims living in India and Pakistan as well as the two parts of Kashmir in the video, saying they should join the The al-Qaeda video calls on Muslims in Kashmir to follow the footsteps of their ‘brothers’ in Iraq and Syria global jihadi movement seeking to re-establish an Islamic caliphate.

“Muslims the world over have picked up arms (and) are marching in the field of jihad. (Even those) who were opposed to jihad now view democracy with despondency and have chosen the path of fighting,” Umar was quoted as saying in the video by Pakistan Risk, a website that offers analysis of political and security issues.

“From the land of Afghanistan, a caravan is heading toward India. Not on the basis of someone’s directive. Not on the basis of some governmental policy. But simply on the basis of abiding by God’s command,” Umar says.

Umar claims “the flag of Islam” will fly above the Red Fort in Delhi and sermons in the city’s main mosque will be read in the caliph’s name.

He further claims the Pakistan government reneged on its “promises” to liberate Kashmir. Referring to curbs imposed on terror groups by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, he says, “The government imposed restrictions and the rulers of the time declared jihad impermissible.” The Pakistani establishment “sold out the Kashmiris” and made Kashmir “an old memorial” rather than an active battlefront, he says.
