Sama Vedam recital begins Friday

TRIPUNITHURA: Selected verses from the Sama Vedam will be recited at the Thamaramkulangara Sree Dharma Sastha temple from Friday to Sunday.


The mode of recital has been designed to give prominence to the rituals as well as the musical chanting of Sama Sangeetham.

Sama Vedam scholars Panjal Thottam Krishnan Namboothiri and his younger brother Sivakaran Namboothiri will recite versed like Gaana Samhitha, Aranyakam and Gayathri from the Sama Vedam.

The verses will be recited in 14 tones. The rendering of the ups and downs of the slowpaced style has much resemblance to ancient Drupad Sangeetham.

The recital will begin at 6 a.m. on Friday. The morning session will conclude at 10 a.m. In the evening, the recital will be held from 5.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

After Deeparadhana, Vaaram Irikkal ritual will be held at the Namaskara Mandapam of the temple.

After the Vaaram Irikkal on Saturday, the ghee sanctified with the Veda chanting will be taken to the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

On Sunday at 6 a.m., temple thantri Puliyannur Muralinarayanan Namboothiri will conduct the kalasha pooja. Selected verses from the Sama Vedam will be recited till 9.30 a.m. Then the ghee will be taken to the sanctum sanctorum in a procession, accompanied by panchari melam.

The thantri will then conduct the Neyyabhishekam on the idol of the presiding deity. The ghee sanctified with the Sama Vedam chanting and the remains obtained after the abhishekam will be distributed among the devotees.
