World Peace Yagam in India

via HK published on January 20, 2007

KANNUR : A yagam to promote world peace, which was last held 1180 years ago, will be held over 16 days in Kannur, Kerala state, India starting from April 16 to May 2 2007.

The organisers, Siddi Vinayaka Mahayaga Society, believes that the time is ripe to hold another such yagam to recharge society with positive energy because of the bad state of the world at present, with so much war and terrorism.

The yagam, a Hindu religious ceremony involving chanting and prayers, to be performed by 150 priests, is expected to draw up to 20,000 people. There will be daily poojas involving the offering of up to 1008 coconuts and 1008 lotus flowers.

The sacred ritual was last performed in Varanasi, in northern India on the full moon night in February 827, to change the fortunes of the district which was suffering acute drought.
