Keralites to celebrate Vishu today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Keralites all over the state celebrate Vishu today. Homes across the state wake up to the sight of Vishukani, the auspicious omen that would usher in prosperity. Items like rice, cucumber, jackfruit and kani konna (cassia fistula) are arranged before the idol of Lord Krishna.
On the Vishu day, an elderly female member of the family lights up the lamp, sights the spread laid out before the idol of Krishna and guides the other family members to follow suit. Vishu is eagerly awaited by many, especially children, for it is an opportunity to size up their pocket money. On the day, elders give out kaineettam to youngsters as tokens of prosperity.
The festival of Vishu generally coincides with the first day of the month of Medam.
The people of Tamil Nadu consider this day as New Year. In Chennai, people thronged temples, offered prayers and greeted one another on the start of the new year Sarvajit.
