Sanskrit scholar Sharma remembered

TRIPUNITHURA: “Celebrated Sanskrit scholar G Vishwanatha Sharma’s efforts in popularising Sanskrit as a common language could bring Sanskrit from the scholars’ domain to the level of laymen,” said Kalady Sanskrit varsity Vice-Chancellor K S Radhakrishnan.

He was delivering the keynote address at a remembrance meet of G Vishwanatha Sharma, held as part of the tenth death anniversary of the Sanskrit scholar, at Kalikotta Palace, here on Tuesday.

“It is nothing but the three-month course conducted by Vishwanatha Sharma at Bhavan’s journalism institute that attracted me towards the study of vedantha,” Radhakrishnan recalled.

“With strenuous effort, Sharmaji formulated an ideal teaching method which turned out to be a guideline for many celebrities to build a common minimum knowledge in Sanskrit. Sharmaji proved the role of Sanskrit in many subjects including Engineering, Medicine and even in advanced Science and Technology,” Radhakrishnan said.

“In a simple but elaborate style Vishwanatha Sharma opened up the unlimited treasure of Vedic language,” Radhakrishnan said. Elamana Hari, one of the colleagues of Vishwanatha Sharma, recalled the contribution of Sharma in moulding a detailed curriculum for easy grasping of Sanskrit.

P Raviachan presided over the function and in his presidential address Raviachan recalled the unassuming character of Vishwanatha Sharma and his sincere efforts to make Sanskrit a spoken language. K S Radhakrishnan handed over a copy of Narayaneeyam, translated by Vishwanatha Sharma, to Sharma’s son Sachidanandan.

At the function students from various schools who stood first in Sanskrit were honoured by giving rewards.
