Kalamandalam Appukutty Poduval passes away
THRISSUR: Kathakali maddalam Acharyan Kalamandalam Appukutty Poduval died at his residence at Malavattam near Thiruvilwamala in Thrissur on Sunday.
He was 84. He was ailing for more than a month. He is survived by wife Parukutty and four daughters .
A true disciple of the late Kathakali maddalam acharyan Thiruvilwamala Venkachan Swami, Appukutty Poduval imbibed all the qualities of his master and was known as the most towering kathakali maddalam artist.
Known for his very powerful strikes on the instrument, he remained unchallenged in the field for over four decades till 2000. He was also the head of the department of kathakali maddlam in Kerala Kalamandalam.
Almost all the leading maddalam artists are his disciples. He was the recipient of Kendra Sangeetha Nataka Akademi award, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award, Kalamandalam fellowship and Kalamandalam award.
He is one of the recipients of Pallavoor Appu Marrar Puraskaram instituted by the State Government.
