Hindu spiritual meet opens at Cherukolpuzha
The 96th edition of the largest annual Hindu spiritual conference, known as the Cherukolpuzha Hindu Matha Parishath, started at the permanent venue on the sandbed of river Pamba at Chrukol, Ayriur in Pathanamthitta on Sunday.
The eight-day conference was inaugurated in the afternoon at the Vidyadhiraja Nagar at Chrukol by Swami Poornamritanandapuri with the opening of the Hindu Dharma Parishath, general secretary of the Amritanandamayi Math at Vallikkavu Kollam at a function presided over by Kerala University Vice-Chancellor MK Ramachandran Nair. PK Sasikala, State president of the Hindu Aikya Vedi delivered the keynote address at the function.
Earlier in the day, the proceedings of the conference opened with TN Upendranatha Kurup, president of the Hindu Matha Maha Mandalam, the organisers of the conference, hoisting the meet flag brought from the Puthiyakavu temple, Ayiroor in a procession, at the Vidyadhiraja Nagar. Organisers claimed more than 30,000 people could have participated in the conference on the first day.
The processions carrying the portrait of Swami Vidhyadhiraja from the Ashram at Panmana and the holy flame, Parishath Jyothi from Ezhumattoor for the conference reached Cherukol before noon . Thousands of Hindus received the portrait and the holy flame.
Elaborate arrangements were made for the Parishath well in advance by a tireless team of organisers.
A representative of the Hindu Matha Maha Mandalam, the organisers of the conference, said they had prepared a pandal to seat 25,000 people who would come to hear the spiritual discourses to be held in the Parishath and to witness various other programmes.
A 20-member main organising committee and 20 committees in charge of various sections of the conference had worked tirelessly for the past many weeks to ensure the successful conduct of the conference.
A representative of the Hindu Matha Maha Mandalam said the Chrukolpuzha Hindu Sangamam, as the conference was known popularly, was the only Hindu spiritual congress of its stature in the entire State.
He said the Mahamandalam had been working for this Parishath for the past 96 years.
