Probe into prof attack derailed: BJP

The Kerala BJP on Friday alleged that the investigations into the Taliban-model attack on a college professor in Muvattupuzha by Islamist outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) had been derailed under instructions from the CPI(M) even as the police seized the car in which the injured assailants were taken to the hospital on the day of the attack.

Former State BJP president PK Krishnadas said in Pathanamthitta that the probe into the attack on the professor had already been practically abandoned after the police and the Popular Front came to an understanding as per the instructions of the ruling CPI(M). The understanding was reached at between the police and the Popular Front at a secret meeting, he alleged.

“As per the understanding, the Popular Front would hand over some of their workers to the police as accused in the case and the police would end the investigations, raids and other actions against the outfit,” Krishnadas said at a public programme in Pathanamthitta. BJP sources said this was a standard technique the CPI(M) had been practicing in Kannur in the cases of political murders there.

Legal experts pointed out that the actual culprits behind the crime would never be brought to justice if what the BJP leader said was true. “The case against the made-up culprits would collapse in the court of law for want of evidence. At the same time, the police would never be able to arrest the real culprits,” said a senior lawyer of the Kerala High Court. “It is a smart technique,” he added.
