Ernakulam Police (Rural) seized the black Mitsubishi Lancer car in which a Popular Front activist who suffered injuries while attacking the professor on July 4 was taken to a hospital in Kochi. The car, seized late Thursday night, was handed over to the Muvattupuzha police.

The car belonged to Najeeb of Kaladi, a leader of the Popular Front, for whom the police had earlier issued a lookout notice in connection with the attack on Professor TJ Joseph. The police had earlier questioned the employees of the nursing home in Kochi where the injured Popular Front activist was treated.

The police on Friday started the process for confiscating the property of Popular Front leaders MK Nasser and KK Ali, key accused whom the First Class Judicial Magistrate of Muvattupuzha had the other day declared as absconders. Nasser was the chief conspirator and mastermind behind the attack on the professor and Ali had arranged the Maruti Omni vehicle used for reaching the assailants to the spot of crime.

Meanwhile, Popular Front functionary Yunus, who was arrested for playing a key role in the attack, told the police that it was Ashraf of Kothamangalam, a State committee member of the Popular Front, who had arranged the funds for planning the attack on the professor.

A group of seven PFI activists headed by Nasser had allegedly attacked Prof Joseph in Muvattupuzha on July 4 while he was returning home after Sunday Mass at a local church. The assailants cut off his right hand in a Taliban-style attack for preparing a question paper that blasphemed Prophet Muhammad.

The police on Friday slapped charges for anti-national activities against Modieenkunju of Aluva, the Ernakulam district secretary of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the political wing of the Popular Front, after seizing certain pamphlets and CDs in a raid on his house. Police officials said that the pamphlets and CDs were intended for spreading anti-national sentiments and religious intolerance.
