Imam Council chief asked to appear before police

KOCHI: The office of the Aluva Assistant Police Superintendent (ASP) on Monday served a notice on Imam Council president Abdul Rehman Bakhiq, directing him to appear before the police on September 6, regarding the seizure of a “highly inflammatory” book.

The police said the notice was served according to the direction of ASP J Jayanath. A police team led by the ASP had recently seized a book titled ‘Asavarnarkku Nallathu Islam’ (Islam is best for the nonsavarnas) from the premises of Periyar Valley campus in Uliyannoor where the office of the Popular Front of India (PFI) was functioning.

The police also arrested six PFI activists in connection with the seizure of the books, and for cases under IPC 153 A promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, residence and language and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony.

According to the police, the 55page book published by Bhahujan Sahithya Academy, printed at Geethanjaly Offset Printers, Kozhikode was distributed by the AllIndia Imams Council, Kozhikode.
