Kerala to donate Rs 5 crore to Pak flood-hit
PNS | Thiruvananthapuram

The CPI(M)-led LDF Cabinet f Kerala on Monday decided to donate Rs 5 crore to the flood-affected people of Pakistan through the Central Government. Briefing newsmen on the decisions of a meeting of the Cabinet, Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan said that the financial help from the State was on humanitarian grounds for the people of Pakistan, who were badly affected by the flood.

Asked what had prompted the Government to take such a curious decision, Achuthanandan said, “The people there (in Pakistan) are reeling under the flood. That is why the Government is helping them.” However, a senior leader of the CPI(M) said he was surprised by the urgency of the State Government to extend help to Pakistan’s flood-hit.

“I am not saying we shouldn’t help people living in such conditions. But we ourselves are not in a good position in such matters. The State is continuously complaining that the Centre is not providing enough flood relief to the State. I hope the Government has its reasons,” he said.
