The alleged minority- appeasement policy of the new Congress-led UDF Government in Kerala in the education sector has begun to receive flak from community outfits that support it. The NSS on Friday asked the UDF Government to desist from the move to give NOCs to more CBSE/ICSE schools in the State.

Charging the Government with efforts to appease minority communities with the hasty decision to give No-Objection Certificates to new CDSE/IVSE schools in the private sector, a statement issued by acting NSS general secretary G Sukumaran Nair said that the move would deprive the children of ordinary families of the opportunity to get education.

The Congress-led Cabinet had at its meeting on Wednesday decided to give NOCs to new private schools with CBSE and ICSE syllabus in the State, a sector almost monopolized by minority communities. Teachers’ outfits of even UDF partners have opposed the decision saying it would lead to grave consequences in the public education scene.

The NSS, which had stated openly that it had relinquished its traditional equi-distance policy to support the UDF in the Assembly election, said that the new move could be seen only as one intended at appeasing the minority communities.

As many as 3,000 teachers might lose jobs since there was a shortage of around 100,000 students in aided and government schools this year, Nair said in the statement. It was the responsibility of the Government to protect the schools that were under the threat of closure due to shortage of students, he said.

Without taking urgent steps to protect the schools under the general education sector, a hasty decision to clear ICSE/CBSE schools – that too without carrying out any study – would invite serious problems, Nair said.
