Revised curriculum for 9000 Madrasas in Kerala

via HK published on September 17, 2011

A new curriculum named  `Tadrib’ has been designed for  introducing in over 9000 Madrasas working under the Islamic Education Board from this academic year  and its state level introduction was inaugurated by IUML state president Panakkad Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal at Tagore Centenary Hall at Kozhikkode on 15 September 2011. Madrasas in and outside state shall be functioning under the control of the Samastha Kerala Islamic Education Board.  Samastha Kerala Jain-iyyathul Ulama General Secretary Cherussery Zainudheen Musaliar while speaking on the occasion mentioned that the revised curriculum has been introduced with an objective of making madrasa education attractive and it also aims to convince the new generation how relevant religious education can be in the changing times.

Earlier the central government through its appeasement policy decided to place madrasa certificates on a par with those issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and affiliates of the Council of Board of School Education in India (COBSE). This would make the pass-outs from madrasas eligible for jobs under the government of India . Recently, the central government granted crores of rupees for changing the curriculum of those madrasas and for introducing science, mathematics and such other subjects, even though the government has no real control on the syllabus followed in the madrasas. Until recently, they were not allowing studies in English, classifying it as `Harram’.  It is widely known that in many states, these madrassas are the breeding centers of terrorist and also their hideouts.

HK readers may recollect that on the basis of Paloli committee report about 50,000 Madrassa Teachers are covered by Pension Fund for which the LDF government sanctioned 4 crores rupees as initial deposit.  Under that scheme, teachers with at least 10 years service shall be eligible for the pension and the maximum amount of pension shall be Rs.4000/- per month.

No doubt that the Madrasas in coming days shall further reduce the number of government aided schools in the state and also substantially reduce the number of students in other CBSE syllabus school where the curriculum is exhaustive and education expensive.
