Stolen Iridium temple dome recovered
Alappuzha The stolen spike-like top of the dome of an ancient village temple, believed to contain rare and costly material iridium, was today found abandoned near a home in the temple vicinity. The top part of the dome of Sreekumarangalam Subramanyaswamy temple near Chengannur town was stolen two days back.
Police said a man found the object and informed them. Police and forensic experts are examining the object. The spike-shaped object, forming the top part of the copper dome of the temple, was a major attraction of the village shrine on account of its radiance, said to be due to the presence of iridium in its making. There were reports in the past that some gangs were plotting to steal the precious object as iridium fetches a huge price in the international market.
Members of the local community had often complained that even aerial surveys had been carried out around the temple area. Suspecting foul play, police had been urged to enforce night patrolling around the temple but no step had been taken to protect the temple, they said.
