Under Sasikala Teacher, Hindus to Protest Fast on June 25 to End Religious Discrimination

published on June 22, 2012

The State Secretary of Hindu Aikya Vedi KP Sasikala Teacher has announced that a massive protest fast will be held on 25 June in front of the secretariat, urging Chief Minister of Kerala to accept the written plea seeking Rights for the Hindu community, duly signed by leaders of various Hindu organizations. This was announced by her at the press meet held in Kozhikode. This will mark the launch of a string of vehement protest marches in the state, stated Sasikala teacher, at a press release in Kozhikode.  The decision to launch the fast was decided by Social Justice and Action Committee, a state conglomeration of over 87 community based organizations. The main focus of the protest fast will be the demand to implement a hike in the amount of lump sum grant being endowed to students of Scheduled Castes and Tribes.

“The demand will voice for the need to increase the lump sum grant amount to Rs 1000 in the LP section, Rs 2000 in UP section and Rs 3000 in High School section. This has also been clearly stated in the Demand Document which has been submitted to the Chief Minister. The amount that is now being provided is a meager sum,” said Sasikala Teacher.

“The Chief Minister had earlier promised a hike in the grant amount, at the time the document was submitted. However, when the amount was received, it eventually turned out to be the same paltry sum of Rs 250. All this, when students of Muslim and Christian communities receive Rs 1000 as scholarship- nothing but a clear case of religious discrimination! The government has forgotten the sad plight of Hindu students hailing from poverty stricken scheduled castes and tribes, who are forced to quit studies, owing to the lack of financial aid,” she observed.

Sasikala Teacher demanded that the education arena must witness a scenario of ‘no discrimination’, with existing bias on religious lines completely wiped away, where poor students will be given ample aid and facilities to further their studies. “The government should focus on this aspect and implement the same at the earliest. The current provision of providing a meagre amount in the name of lump sum grant is equal to unjust denial of their studies. The Central and State government are resorting to horrendous and glaring religious persecution by denying constitutional and fundamental rights and conveniently ignoring religious values, “ she added.

“The government has suffered an inevitable blow with the Supreme Court putting an end to the Haj subsidies and stalling the proposed 4.5% sub-quota for the OBC grants. However, they are resorting to other ways of discrimination by other wayward means. Poverty and backwardness should not be resolved on religious basis. The protest that will be launched on 25 June will be clear and loud voice against the prevalent religious discrimination. It will embark from the Secretariat,” she reiterated.

The demonstration will witness the participation of prominent Hindu Organizations heads like Acharya MK Kunjol, President of State Harijan Samajam, State General Secretary of Hindu Aikya Vedi Kummanom Rajashekharan and the heads of numerous other Hindu organizations.
