The Kerala Police on Thursday arrested Islamist student activists Nasim (21) of Konni and Shefique (22) of Pandalam, both in Pathanamthitta district, for the murder of ABVP leader Vishal (19) the other day at Christian College at Chengannur in Alappuzha district.

The First Class Judicial Magistrate Court, Chengannur remanded Nasim and Shefique, activists of the Campus Front of India, the students’ wing of Islamist organization Popular Front of India, in judicial custody for 14 days and sent to the sub-jail in Mavelikkara, Alappuzha. Nasim is a final-year BA (economics) student of Christian College.

Vishal, ABVP’s Nagar Samiti chief of Chengannur, was hacked by a gang of Campus Front activists on Monday in front of the college in Chengannur during a programme to welcome new degree course students to the institution. He succumbed to the hack injuries at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kottayam early Tuesday morning.

Vishal’s funeral was held at his residence in Mulakkuzha, Chengannur on Wednesday. The ABVP observed a State-wide education bandh on Thursday to protest against the inaction on the part of the Government to effectively end the alleged operations of Muslim fundamentalists in the college campuses in Kerala.

The organization said that the Government should ban the Campus Front, which was a new form of banned Islamist organization SIMI. Campus Front’s parent body PFI was responsible for the Taliban-model chopping-off of the right hand of a college professor in July, 2010 for preparing a question paper which allegedly blasphemed Prophet Muhammad.
