VHP members prevent slaughter of calves at Kochi.
The animals were taken from the location and shifted outside the premises of the slaughter house in the night. Meanwhile, local police closed down the slaughter house. North police ASI M N Suresh said that VHP members prevented workers from killing the calves meant for slaughter on Thursday night. The VHP members threatened to prevent the functioning of the slaughter house till a proper solution is found, including finding an alternate and better slaughter house outside the premises of the city. A vehicle carrying animals for slaughter was also confiscated. It has been alleged that the vehicle was carrying animals thrice its average capacity. According to C G Rajagopal, BJP Language Minority Cell convener, the condition of the slaughter house is pitiable. He also stated that it has gone from bad to worse in the months following an earlier protest regarding the hygiene of the place.
“The animals have been kept at places where garbage has piled up,†he said.
The members alleged that several rules laid down in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act were being flouted by the slaughter house in Kaloor. Rajagopal said that a complaint with the police regarding the matter has been lodged and a protest march is being planned on Friday morning in this regard.
