Furore in Kerala Assembly over School Principal Headmistress’s ‘Vindictive’ Transfer

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For the first time in the ongoing Assembly session, the House was adjourned for the day on Wednesday after Opposition members disrupted proceedings over the transfer of the principal headmistress of a government school here, which they alleged was a ‘’vindictive action’’ taken by Education Minister P K Abdu Rabb.

Raising the issue through a submission, V Sivankutty of the CPM said that Principal Headmistress of Cotton Hill Government Girls Higher Secondary School K K Urmila Devi was transferred for ‘’not properly receiving the VIP (Education Minister) and for keeping the school gates closed when the Minister arrived for a function in the school on June 16.’’ During his submission, Sivankutty made certain objectionable remarks against the Education Minister, which caused an uproar from the treasury benches. The Opposition also soon rose to their feet and traded slogans with the ruling party legislators.
Though Sivankutty soon withdrew the objectionable remarks, he continued with his attack on the Education Minister. ‘’Is Abdu Rabb a minister or a king,?’’ Sivankutty asked. ‘’The principal HM belongs to the Dalit community. She suffers from cancer and her husband is a heart patient. The action against her comes at a time when she has just a year of service left,’’ Sivankutty said.

He also alleged that though the principal HM was served a show cause notice asking her to give an explanation within 15 days, she was transferred just four days after issuing the notice.

The function at Cotton Hill School on June 16 was organised for the presentation of awards for  best English Clubs in high schools.
