Kerala Govt. ignores report linking explosives from quarry being used by Terrorists

A shocking report by Environmental commitee has revealed that explosive materials used in stone quarries are likely to find their way into the hands of terrorists and be used for anti-national activities. The report has been presented following a detailed study on stone quarries.

According to the report, “no one knows where the explosive materials are being taken to, what they are being used for” and “there is no inquiry into the same”. Kerala being a nursery of terror activities, the report has to be taken with ample seriousness.

Explosive license can be procured only after a nod from the SP, Forest Divisional Officer, Fire and Rescue Additional Divisional Officer etc.
According to the report, “the license obtained in Kerala is after adhering to these rules and regulations. However, there are no details as to how these explosive materials are used thereafter.”

The findings of the commission are as follows:

•    After procuring license, are these the same materials being used as explosives?
•    Is the entire quantity being used in quarries?
•    Are the explosive materials entirely in the custody of quarry owners?
•    Is a register being maintained for the same?

The report points out that “the state has no mechanism to conduct an inquiry into the matter. This is a matter of grave concern.”

Police findings have revealed that explosives used in terror strikes in Kerala have been procured mainly from places associated with quarries. The commission has also suggested that the Explosives Department of Kerala Police conduct an inspection of quarries, once a month, in order to prevent such untoward incidents.

However, sources have revealed that in spite of having received first hand reports of the gravest concern, the state Home Department is yet to swing into action. It is said that pressure tactics from members of the allied govt and religious groups have led to the report being given lukewarm response. Negligence of the report, it is said, will
have the most dangerous repercussions.
