The state government of Kerala has filed an affidavit regarding the non-granting of bail to those accused in the gruesome Marad massacre. The government has stated that granting of bail will only serve to fuel the prevailing strain in the area. The affidavit comes in wake of reports submitted by state intelligent services and Crime Branch.

The affidavit is said to have stated that Marad is a place where untoward incidents can occur any time. As many as  persons have been convicted in the Marad case, who have sought a bail. “The case should not be treated as one in the usual course. The victims were murdered after careful planning,” said sources.

“In case the Supreme Court plans to grant bail, it should be granted under stringent measures. The accused should not be permitted to enter Kozhkode district. There are chances that the other 40, will also seek bail, if bail is granted to these 22. And once that happens, chances of trouble brewing in the area are very high,” said sources quoting the affidavit filed by Adv Ramesh Babu.

The SC had taken into consideration, the bail plea put forth by 22 people, which includes the one by prime accused Bijli. However, state government counsels Adv Ramesh Babu and Adv V Giri have contended the same. Following this, the Bench consitituting of Justice SJ Mukhopadhyay sought an affidavit from the state government clarifying their stand.

The SC had earlier granted bail to 24 accused, who were convicted by the HC. It was following this that the current set of 22 accused have sought bail.
