Kollam, Kerala: Singing of the national song, ‘Vande Mataram’ in lieu of the Independence Day celebrations for 2014 has been banned by the Jihadi group SDPI. This ban has been imposed TKM Public School, Karikoode, Kollam.

School authorities are said to have succumbed to pressure from the Islamic group which claimed that the gesture of ‘namasthe’ by performers in a dance of Vande Mataram, happens to be ‘unIslamic’.

Under pressure from the same group, dance steps to drum beats have been introduced for the Independence Day celebrations. Even though rehearsal for performing Vande Mataram dance was complete,  the alternate drum beat dance practice began yesterday. Teachers and students of the school came to know about this change of programme only in the last minute. According to source, teachers and students said that school authorities changed the programme on instructions from SDPI after holding an urgent meeting.

TKM School had chalked out major plans for conducting Independence Day programmes with 6000 participants, in order to claim a place in the Limka Book of Records. Students from LKG to class 12 were to participate in these programmes.

Teachers and students are now apprehensive of success, owing to  shortage of time for practicing “Drum Beat Dance”.

It was a group of parents, who accompanied their children and asked the school management to cancel the Vande Mataram programme. Other students and teachers of the school, along with TKM College have planned a protest today in Kollam.
