Thiruvananthapuram: Two days after a private school in Kollam district of Kerala was forced to drop national song ‘Vande Mataram’ during the Independence Day-eve celebrations, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said that he will order a probe into the incident.
Chandy said, “You have brought this to my notice. I will investigate and find out the truth.”
The song was dropped after alleged protests from some parents and a local Social Democratic Party of India leader as they said that the song would hurt the religious sentiments of some sections.
SDPI leader AK Salahuddin, who is also a parent met the school authorities along with other parents and said they had apprehensions about their children performing this song.
The SDPI has, however, distanced itself from the matter saying that the party had nothing to do with the issue.
Meanwhile, school authorities have said that the song was changed only because younger children had difficulty performing it.
According to school management sources, SDPI, a fundamentalist outfit having some pockets of influence in the area, on Thursday gave a letter to the authoritities of TKM Centenary Public School at Karicode insisting on avoiding rendition of “Vande Mataram” as part of the celebrations.
The organisation allegedly told the school authorities that singing ‘Vande Mataram” would hurt the religious sentiments of certain sections and threatened that if its demand was not followed there would be “dangerous consequences”, they said on Friday.
Fearing trouble, the school authorities dropped the singing of the national song but the issue sparked protests from youth organisations of various parties.
