Kannur: CPM Kerala state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has insulted the Indian Army, referring to them as rapists. According to Kodiyeri, “enforcing AFSPA will lead to Army personnel raping women”. There are also allegations against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for stating in Legislative Assembly that “Army harassed women”. There are widespread demands for penalizing Kodiyeri for having made these statements.

“Women will be raped, and any group of over four persons meeting in public places will result in them being shot dead, by armed forces, if AFSPA is enforced,” said Kodiyeri while addressing Nyoonapaksha Samskaarika Samiti in Kannur. The inflammatory statement comes soon after statements of similar kind were made by Pinarayi Vijayan.

There has been strong contemplation for implementation of AFSPA in Kannur, following a spare of murders in the region, executed with the blessings of state government machinery.
Kodiyeri is likely to have had minority appeasement in mind while deliberately defaming Indian Army. His statements like “Islam is a religion of peace and can never come to terms with terrorism” and “enforcement of UAPA is strictly aimed at Muslims and Communists” while addressing the seminar “Mainstream politics and Minorities”, is being seen as nothing but appeasement.
