Alappuzha: Here is the story of a Hindu family from a frugal background, living in perpetual terror and fear of Jihadist attacks, just because their son fell in love with a Muslim girl and married her. Faced with an onslaught of death threats, the family has fled their native place and now leads a nomadic life in stealth, in various lodges.

It was almost a month ago that Sunil married his neighbor Shiney, daughter of Naushad in a temple in Tamil Nadu, according to Hindu rites. Fearing a backlash, the couple eloped. The wedding which took place on 23 January was registered on 28 January.

Following this, a habeas-corpus was filed by Shiney’s parents, where upon the couple presented themselves before the Court. With Shiney stating that she had married Sunil with her on consent and that she was desirous of being with him as his wife, the Court granted permission to the duo to stay together.

The scenario however violent and turbulent with the Jihadists waiting outside the Court room barged in trying to take the girl with them, by force. They however beat a hasty retreat with police intervention. However, they left with a warning that they would be killed if they happened to step into their homes. This left the family terrified.

The family members consisting of Gangadharan, his wife Chandrika, son Sunil Kumar and his wife Shiney have thereafter been living incognito, after having fled their home in Alappuzha. Gangadharan, who works in a wood factory, is now out of job, owing to the pattern of life they have been leading currently. This has taken the family to the depths of penury, with no income inflow. Sources have revealed that local police and political persons have also been trailing them. A complaint has been registered with the Alappuzha police.

The family lives in dread and stands at a perilous mode, where they can be attacked and annihilated at any moment, staying in an area where 90% of the minority community stands organized. Sunil and Shiney are still wondering why a case of sincere feelings towards each other has earned and resulted in so much of wrath. Adding to their fear is a bitter truth that political groups who opposed Ghar Wapsi and hailed the ‘Kiss of Love’ event as laudable, are hand in glove with Jihadists, in their task of annihilating Sunil and his family.
