Kottayam: The latest threat to the security of temples is the usage of helicameras. Sources have reported that helicameras being used for marriage functions and festivals in famed temples have left temples and premises in deep peril, with temple and surroundings being well covered by these aerial cameras.

In a recent instance, a complaint was received by police from temple authorities of the famed Ettumanoor temple. According temple authorities, “videographers came and took permission to shoot programmes. And then, under this pretext, they started taking an aerial coverage of the temple. A complaint has been registered with the police.”

Police have issued notice of there not being any restrictions on the use of helicameras, other than in places under stringent security or conservation zones or places sporting government hoardings. However they have also made it clear that any complaints arising from concerned authorities where helicameras are being used will be subject to probe.

Till date Guruvayur temple has not issued any notice related to prohibition of the use of helicameras. Other temples like Sabarimala, which has received international fame, are likely to make use of helicameras in the future. However, these cameras, which are operated solely by remote control devices, are a serious security threat, likely to be misused by terrorists.

Helicameras have the potential to cover video images in a range of one kilometer of the specified spot and at an altitude of 300 feet above.
