Evangelical Nuisance Extended to Wildlife as well – Serrated Cross Plantation in Forests

Kochi: There are speculations over the injury caused to the wild elephant spotted in Kuttampuzha, the gash being rendered by the jagged end of the cross planted by church authorities in the forest. Sources indicate that these crosses, which are planted illegally inside forests, have serrated edges to prevent wild elephants from uprooting them. Apart from causing serious gashes to elephants, they are likely to cause severe injury to other wild animals as well. Inspite of having spotted these illegal lethal structures inside forest lands, authorities are allegedly indifferent towards the matter.

According to reports, illegal planting of crosses inside forest land is a clever move to usurp jungle area en masse. “Planting of cross is the first step, followed by construction of a small concrete boundary, which soon leads to worship. This helps church to stake their claim on the land hastily. And with congenial governments, evangelists crookedly get matters done in their favour,” stated sources.

Reports state that the illegally planted crosses are supplemented with jagged edges and will cause the elephant’s trunks to be severed when they wind their trunks around them. Wild boars, deer etc also face threat of injury as they leaning on these structures and scratch themselves. “These are threats to the existence of wildlife and should be removed immediately. A case should be registered against those who plant these deadly weapons, in accordance with Wildlife Protection Act,” said a wildlife activist on condition of anonymity.
