Kerala high court permits nuns &priests to become advocates

The Kerala High has in a judgement today said that Nuns and Priests could practice as advocates. Justice Balakrishnan Nair has directed the bar council to take necessary steps to conduct the enrollment of Fr Thomas Puthussery and Sister Tessy as advocates.

The Bar Council taking the stand that the priesthood is a full time employment and the nuns and priests hence cannot take up the profession as advocate had rejected their enrollment. Pointing out that the Bar Council’s was not correct the Court said that the priesthood was not a profession but a way of life. Even if one after enrollment as an advocate takes up religious activities he should not be restricted from doing his legal profession, the court said.
