Lust for power lands CPM in feud

via Mahadev published on March 26, 2006

The faction fued in the Kerala state unit of the Communist Party of India(Marxist)) “is not an ideological clash but a fight for power”, according to Dr. M G S Narayanan, the Eminent Historian.

In an interview with Janmabhumi Dr Narayanan said that the on going competition between the group leaders in the party is for capturing control over crores of rupees worth property and the rule of the state. Altogether politics has “become an ugly scenario” and hence many had lost interest in it, he added.

In the Indian Communist Party, groupism was there right from its birth. Initially, there was feud between Ghote and Adikari, then Randive took over by ousting P C Joshi.

In the Kerala, the party idologues like EMS  had never participated in any agitations , even in the Punnapra-Vayalar agitation. And yet, he was able to capture party positions through gossips, for this he also used the party publications. The disciples of EMS, Mr. Sitharam Yachuri and Mr. Prakash Karat had also reached top rungs of the party without participating in any agitations.

It was  Mr.K Kelappan who understood and resisted the dictatorial attitude of the Communist party and he warned about this through his speeches and writings.

The hue and cry the Communists are making against accepting foreign funds is ridiculous. In fact the Communist party might be the first to receive foreign funds from the USSR for its operations here. Its allegation that the freedom struggle was funded by the Americans was an attempt by the communists to cover up their acceptance of funds from Soviet Union.

From the beginning CPM’s leadership was from the upper caste, leaders like Adhikari, Ghote,  Denge, Nanboothiripad, all belonged to the upper caste. But they were able to exploit and utilise the lower caste organisations like SNDP by presenting it as a party of the poor. Removal of caste titles of Nambiar and Menon by AKG and Damodaran from their names was to influence the Ezhavas. Meanwhile to retain the obligation of the lower castes towards the Brahmins due to the influence of the caste system, EMS retained his Nanboothiripad title, MGS pointed out.
