Cong, CPM playing vote bank politics: Advani

BJP leader LK Advani has said that the unanimous decision of the Kerala Assembly to work for the release of PDP chairman Abdul Nasser Madani from the Coimbatore prison where he is lodged as an accused in the blasts case was a clear indication of both the UDF and LDF encouraging ‘religious extremist elements’ in the State.

He charged both the Congress and the CPI(M) with trying to play vote bank politics by ‘appeasing’ the minority communities. “The Congress and Left parties are not much bothered about people’s day-to-day problems but are keen about playing vote bank politics,” he alleged.

Alleging that Kerala continued to suffer from slower economic growth mainly due to the ‘misrule’ by the successive Congress and CPI (M)-led fronts, Mr Advani asked the people to vote for his party to help the State achieve sustained growth.

“Kerala had for long been reeling under the clutches of Congress-led UDF and CPI(M)-led LDF, which dragged the State economically backward through their ‘misrule’, minority appeasement policies and vote bank politics,” Mr Advani said addressing a an election meeting here on Monday.

“The coming Assembly polls have thrown an opportunity to oust both the fronts out of power,” he added.

Referring to the Sardar Sarovar issue, he said the Supreme Court’s observation that construction work on Sardar Sarovar Project on Narmada river could continue vindicated the stand taken by the BJP Government in Gujarat.

“Gujarat is treading a path of tremendous economic growth and the agitation by the Narmada Bachao Andolan Committee is aimed at thwarting development activities initiated by the BJP Government in Gujarat,” he said.

The construction work to increase the dam height would help three neighbouring States to mitigate acute drinking water scarcity and would give a huge boost to the agriculture sector in the region, Mr Advani said.

(The Apex Court, after hearing the Narmada Bachao Andolan’s petition seeking halt to the work on raising the height of the dam, ordered on Monday that work on the project should go on side by side with effective rehabilitation of the aggrieved people.)

Coming down on the UPA Government-appointed Banerjee Commission, Mr Advani said its report had termed as an ordinary incident the Godhra carnage in Gujarat in which 54 pilgrims had been burnt to death by miscreants. He added that efforts to ‘deceive’ people would not succeed by publicising such ‘one-sided’ report. “This equally amounted to helping the religious extremist forces,” he said.

Attacking the Left parties, he said the Communists’ presence was confined to three states of West Bengal, Tripura and Kerala. Fast-changing economic scenarios led to setbacks for communists even in Russia and East European countries.
