Appeasement policy makes Kerala a centre of extremism

The seizure of large cache of arms and ammunitions from two places in Thrissur district on Friday acquires significance following a report in the New Indian Express that for the first time in the history of the state, the state government had been alerted by the Centre about the security threat by the Pakistan-based militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen during the assembly elections currently under way.

The recovery of arms and explosives from a house in Alapuzha and the blasts in Kozhikode in less than three months point towards what is being cooked up behind the scenes. In fact, about two years back a national daily had quoted the Defence Officials as saying that Kerala’s coastal belt had been becoming a haven for the terrorists.

The warning by the Indian Defence officials certain to have fell on the deaf ears as the ruling political parties for fear of losing their vote bank never wanted to take it seriously on their usual rhetoric that it would antagonise them. Surprisingly, for them the security of the nation, seems to become insignificant when compared to the vote bank.

The latest appeasement strategy of both the LDF and the UDF was the passing of a resolution unanimously in the state assembly hurriedly before the commencement of the elections to get the fundamentalist Madani, who is in the Coimbatore jail as a prime a accused in the serial bomb blast there which claimed the lives of about 60 people, released from Jail.

Now in this series, comes the report of the Marad Judicial Commission which exposes the appeasement policies of these political parties. The Commission which had completed its mission and submitted the report to the Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy in Feb reported to have found out the alleged involvement of the IUML in the massacre of eight Hindu fishermen. According to the report the State Working Committee member of the IUML and Calicut Development Authority Chairman, M C Mayin Haji had prior knowledge about the conspiracy that led to the murder. The Report by the Commission Thomas P Joseph said that Crime Branch had failed to unearth the deep-rooted conspiracy behind the incident. Taking strong exception to the Crime Branch claim that no external forces were involved in the case the Commission said the Crime Branch did not probe this aspect and its stand “is mysterious and against facts”.

There are also references in the report about the involvement of organisations including fundamentalist outfits in the massacre. Even the involvement of the then Kozhikode District Collector also have a mention in the Commission’s report which proved that the charges made by the RSS against the Collector Mr Sooraj were true.

Besides, the Commission is understood to have remarked that the adamant attitude of the government to avoid a CBI probe “is mysterious” and added “the government’s arguments for not ordering a CBI probe are flimsy”.

All these events lead to the conjecture that the political parties in Kerala for keeping the vote bank in tact and remain in power continued with their appeasement policy which in turn has converted the state in to haven of terrorists.

Unfortunately, majority of the people of the state, though claim to be literates, appear to have been intellectually enslaved by the pseudo-secular philosophy percolated into their psyches by both the LDF and UDF. Hence, they are impervious to the impending danger!
