Shiv Sena men storm into Maldives Consulate in TVM

TVM:A group of Shiv Sena activists stormed into the premises of  Maldivian consulate in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. The timely intervention of police avoided any untoward incidents. The only foreign mission in the city is the Consulate of Maldives.

 The Sena activists gathered infront of the gate of Maldivian consulate in protest of Maldivian authority’s ill-treatment towards Indians working in Maldives. Meanwhile, some Sena activists stormed into the compund causing panic to the consular staffs. The police immediately reached there and prevented the protesters from entering into the building.

Recently seventeen Indians had been deported from Maldives allegedly after a ‘scuffle’ with local employees at their work place.

According to many workers, it is common for non-Muslim Indian workers in Maldives to be assaulted and abused by the local people.

 In the recent incident, Anil Kumar, an Indian worker, was attacked without any provocation and when other Indian workers questioned it, some fanatic local people hit all Indian workers on the head with shovels. And following the brutal attack, Indian workers ran out and some even jumped into the sea to get away with lives.

According to reports, the workers who returned from Maldives said it was a unilateral and brutal attack.

‘‘The injured did not get any medical attention initially. Even the manager of the company, one Mr.Rashid, sided with the locals,’’an Indian worker said.

‘‘It was terrible. They even threw rice on our faces,’’the Malayalee worker who had returned from Maldives said.

“Not only that, the Indians had also to face ill-treatment by the authorities after being imprisoned in the island’s jail”, he added.

“By whatever means, we must stop this trend of humiliating Indians abroad, no one should dare to humiliate an Indian”, another worker said.

And, Tuesday’s dramatic incidents that occured in Thiruvananthapuram has given another dimension to the issue.
