The 12-hour BJP sponsored hartal to protest against the hike in fuel prices on Friday in Kerala will go ahead as per schedule announced its spokesperson BK Sekhar. He denied reports that the BJP had called off the hartal.

Sekhar urged the Government to forego the additional income that the State Government earned through taxes in the context of the hike in petro-prices.

He told newsmen on Thursday that the LDF, which had so far claimed to being a Front representing the poor and farmers, should give justice to them. “The additional income that the State Government gets will amount to Rs 200 crore through tax on the hike in petroleum products’ prices. This should be given up if the LDF Government really cares for the people,” he said.

The BJP spokesman said that the previous UDF Government had adopted this method and the VS Achudanthan -led Government should also follow the precedent. “To an extent, the extra burden on the people can be minimized by this,” he added.

Media, hospitals, marriages and milk vehicles have been exempted from the hartal call given by the BJP. The BJP would also organise protest processions and meetings at district and panchayat levels.

Meanhwile, the Motor Transport Workers and Engineering Mazdoor Federation affiliated to BMS in Kerala would observe a general strike on Friday to protest against the petroleum products price hike. The strike was only a beginning of an intensified agitation demanding the rollback of the increased price of petroleum products, BMS State secretary MK Kamalan told reporters here on Thursday. A protest rally would be organised as part of the strike, he said.
