Assault on doctor: Cherkalam not in chargesheet

KASARGOD: Former minister and IUML leader Cherkalam Abdullah, who was charged with assaulting Dr Jose D’ Cruze, medical officer at the Manjeswaram Hospital, was dropped from the chargesheet.

The former minister had reportedly assaulted Dr Jose D’Cruze on August 24, 2005, after summoning him to the Guest House. The issue had kicked up a row in the state with the government doctors striking work demanding action against the former minister.

The chargesheet will be filed at the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here shortly. The Manjeswaram police had charged a case against Cherkalam and three others. But the police prepared the chargesheet only against three IUML activists dropping the name of Cherkalam. But the three accused had left for the Gulf after the incident.
