The Vande Mataram centenary celebrations in Kerala were largely organised by the BJP and Sangh Parivar organisations in district headquarters.

In Kozhikode, members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad organised Vande Mataram celebrations. V Gopalankutty Master in his inaugural address said that Muslim leaders were trying to lower the status of the National Song and were forgetting its history.

In Thiruvananthapuram, Bharatiya Vichara Kendram director P Parameshwaran inaugurated the Vande Mataram celebrations. Hindu Aikya Vedi secretary J Sisupalan addressed the gathering. Sisupalan said that the statement by Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Indian Union Muslim League leader E Ahamed that singing Vande Mataram was not mandatory was a blot on the face of the nation. Almost all the BJP units in the State celebrated the centenary of the song.

RSS Sahaprant Pracharak J Nandakumar said that national symbols were not optional features. He said, “You cannot make a patriot by appeasing him.”

However, the celebrations were limited to Parivar circles. Government or NGOs took little interest in observing the Vande Mataram Day.

The mood of the State was conveyed by pop singer Usha Uthup, who talked to reporters at the Nedumbassery airport.

She said: “Let’s not create a controversy over the beautiful song. It is not important whether all people sing it or not. Let’s all try to enjoy the patriotic song,” said Usha Uthup, who has sung the song in five languages.
