Marad killings: BJP demands CBI probe

| State BJP president PS Sreedharan Pillai, while welcoming report of the judicial commission which probed the carnage, finding lapses on the part of certain officials in preventing the violence, expressed fears that the Government by putting the blame on the officials was attempting to “mislead the people and enable the actual persons involved in attack escape”. | ||
| Pillai told newsmen here on Tuesday that his party and various Hindu organisations had been demanding that the Government constitute a CBI inquiry from the beginning to bring to light the persons involved in the carnage. “Only a CBI probe can bring to light the conspiracy behind the attack, the extremist connections and the sources of financial support to such outfits,” he said. | ||
| Nine persons, eight of them belonging to a particular community, were hacked to death in a sudden attack by a group, allegedly with the backing of a fundamentalist outfit in May 2003. | ||
| Pointing out that there was “difference” between the Marad violence which claimed five lives in 2002 and the 2003 carnage, Pillai alleged that the second incident was a planned attack on innocent people. | ||
| A total of 73 types of weapons and explosives used in the attack had been recovered from a place of worship, he said and reiterated the plea for a CBI probe. | ||
| The report by the Thomas P Joseph Commission had requested action against four top officials – then Kozhikode district collector TO Sooraj, Mahesh Kumar Singla, Inspector General of Police, who headed the crime branch investigation into the carnage, Sanjeev Kumar Padjoshi, who was the Kozhikode City Police Commissioner, Abdul Rahim, the then Assistant Commissioner (south). | ||
