KOZHIKODE: A group of CPM workers attacked a house at Puthupanam, coming under the Vatakara police station limits in the early hours of Thursday, and hacked a middle-aged man and his wife who are supporters of the BJP.

Surendran, 55, of Muthirakkalil House and wife Santha, 40, who suffered injuries in the incident, have been admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College. Police have registered a case against 15 people, out of which 10 have been identified as CPM workers from the area.

The attack took place after 12.30 a m, said the police. The assailants hurled country bombs at the house in which Surendran and Santha were asleep, before breaking open the doors. They had also disconnected the power supply before entering the house, police said.

The target of the assailants, however, was said to be the couple’s son who was an active RSS worker. He managed to escape unhurt, police said.

Tension prevailed in the area after the incident and police have been deployed to prevent further violence. Both the RSS and the CPM workers took out demonstrations. The area has been remaining volatile for quite some time following repeated altercation between the CPM and RSS workers. The situation is now under control, police said.
