KOCHI: Former minister and IUML leader Cherkalam Abdullah, who allegedly committed contempt of court, will be served the memo of charges in one week by the Kerala High Court.

A Full Bench, consisting of Justice J B Koshy, Justice A K Basheer and Justice K P Balachandran, directed him to submit a written explanation in one month, and posted the case on January 17, 2007.

The case had been filed by P Damodaran, secretary, Kerala State Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samiti, Kasargod, alleging that Cherkalam led a demonstration on June 1, 2006, at Cheruvathoor, obstructing traffic on the public roads in violation of the High Court directives.

According to the petitioner, the demonstration held in connection with the reception accorded to Cherkalam by IUML workers on his assumption of office as a minister, was in fact a planned attack on the person and property of the people of the locality, who were not the supporters of IUML.

The demonstrators who marched with weapons caused extensive damage to the properties on both sides of the road. Shops were looted, houses plundered, and parking vehicles were damaged.

The demonstrators had not obtained the permission of the Superintendent of Police to conduct the demonstration.
