KASARAGOD: Police today resorted to lathicharge on a group of Sangh Parivar activists during a day-long hartal in Mangalpady village limits near border town of Manjeshwaram to protest the attack on a local BJP leader.

The trouble began when a few traders supported by CPM opposed the hartal. Bus services between Kasaragod and Mangalore were suspended apprehending trouble, police said.

The situation in the area was said to be stable now.

The hartal was being observed to protest the stabbing of BJP Manjeshwaram area president and a ward member of the Mangalpady panchayat K Valsaraj (35) by a group of unidentified persons last night.

The BJP leader, who sustained multiple injuries, is being treated in a mangalore hospital, police said adding an attempt to murder case has been registered.
